يتحدث مالكيان عن أسباب الدور الكبير الذي لعبه الأرمن في فن التصوير الفوتوغرافي عندما كان حديث العهد في الامبراطورية العثمانية، وويتناول الأسباب التي جعلتهم سباقين في هذا المضمار. بالاستناد الى صور فوتوغرافية قديمة من ارشيف صور "مشروع صور الشرق الاوسط وأرمينيا" الذي تم تأسيسه حديثا، تلقي المحاضرة الضوء على اعمال الجيل الاول المعروف من المصورين الفوتوغرافيين الأرمن مثل عبدالله فارس، باسكال صباح، وغابرييل ليكيجيان، الذين حققوا نجاحاً كبيراً في القسطنطينية ومن ثم في مصر.

The talk will explore the reasons as to why Armenians played a dominant role and were considered to be pioneers in the newly invented photographic industry in the Ottoman Empire. Drawing upon vintage images acquired for a newly formed archive, The Middle East and Armenian Photography Project (MEAPP), this presentation will highlight the work of the more prominent first generation Armenian photographers such as the Abdullah Freres, Pascal Sebah and Gabriel Lekegian who enjoyed tremendous success first in Constantinople and eventually in Egypt.
